I checked the power cord on both ends to be sure that it was properly connected. I also tried it in a different outlet just to be sure. My bf's computer is right next to mine, and his is working fine. I had left my computer on while I was at work and came home and it was off (no one had been at my house). This has happened a couple times recently, where I come home from work and my computer is off. I'm presuming at this point that it has something to do with the power supply within the computer. What do you guys think?

First of all, unplug it from the power source, wait 20 minutes and then plug it back in....many power supplies have a means by which they will shut off and need to be "reset" by doing this. Second, be sure that there isn't a toggle switch at the back of the PC, up top, near the power cord that accidentally got flipped "off". DO NOT mess with the switch that can change the power supply from 120 volt to 240 volt, if such a switch is present.

Many times, computers that have been left on for an extended period of time have actually gone into "Standby" and to reactivate them simply requires a press of the space bar, a tap of the Enter key, or a click of the mouse.....have you tried that?

There are ways of preventing the computer from entering "Standby" by changing the Power Options in Control Panel.

Similar "sleep" modes and "hibernation" modes can be adjusted in the Power Options to prevent the computer from "timing out" from inactivity and entering "Standby" or Hibernation" states.

If, after checking these various settings and especially after looking for a master power switch on the back of the case, your computer will not start up, then you've most likely got a fried power supply or motherboard or hard drive.

Taking it to a local repair shop where they can quickly plugin a test power supply will definitively determine if the power supply is the culprit and needs to be replaced. It shouldn't cost more than about $75 for a new power supply on an average machine (plus labor). But some are proprietary and may need to be ordered from the manufacturer of the computer (Dell in particular, as well as other brands).

The CPU, motherboard and/or potential provide is overheating that is why it takes position once you're watching video clips or operating countless purposes. If that's the CPU or motherboard, the onboard temperature sensors are detecting the area and closing right down to shop the pc. often, the pc ought to beep about the overheat situation yet yours may be diverse. First, even as the pc is operating, placed your hand close to the fan on the back of the pc the position the potential wire plugs into the container. ensure that you do sense air flowing. in case you do not, then the potential provide's fan may be useless. you'll prefer to modify the potential provide (or have a fix man or woman open the potential provide to modify its fan). If the potential provide is shifting air effectively, and also you're comfortable establishing your pc, open the container and are available upon all the followers that are interior. there is one or 2 fastened to the front, rear or aspects of the case. there'll also be one on the CPU with a huge metallic heatsink. ensure that the single on the CPU is operating. If that's not spinning, commence taking area in a movie and it really is going to commence going earlier the entire gadget turns off. If the fan not in any respect activates, it desires to get replaced. verify the different followers interior the case. they could purely change on even as the pc is operating not uncomplicated so play some video clips and word in the experience that they commence operating. If one among them is useless, you are able to prefer to modify it. the most severe followers, nonetheless, are the CPU and potential provide ones. Now that the pc is open, sparkling all the followers and vents with compressed air. you should purchase cans of compressed air from pc/electronics shops. do not use a vacuum purifier because it may generate countless static electrical energy as well as suck up little factors out of your pc.

Well, that would be my guess too... if you press Power and you don't hear a sound, chances are high your power supply is dead. If your power supply starts (you'll hear it and if it has a fan on the back it will spin), than it's something else unfortunately.

For instance, a computer can turn itself off if it overheats (mine did that before, resolved by cleaning the fan on the CPU and changing the thermal paste).

Good luck

It could be overheating, check the fans for dirt buildup and if they are even turning, check the power supply box (unit) it could be faulty or may have a blown capacitor.

Some computer systems have settings to automaticall turn off, however, usually those are turned off. Go into your properties menu, and look for any of those settings, and confirm they are turned off, if they are there.
