I have a torn meniscus in my right knee. I have been putting off having the surgery done, not because I am afraid of the surgery, but because I am afraid of the MRI that I have to have before they can do the surgery. Without the surgery, it is my understanding from my doctor, that the torn meniscus will not get better and will likely get worse. I tried 12 weeks of physical therapy to see if I could alleviate the pain some, but it didn't work at all. So, I use a lot of ibuprofen and use ice on my knee (I actually use a bag of frozen peas and it works really well - thanks to my PT for the suggestion). I have talked to several people who had the surgery done to repair their torn meniscus. It is done laproscopically so it is not a bad surgery, but there is a 6-8 week recovery period. Everyone I have talked to said the pain is gone and the knee feels 100% better. So, the meniscus is not exactly the same after surgery to repair the tear as it was before the tear occurred, but it will be better.

I was helping a co-worker 3 years ago lift a big screen TV, I knew I could not lift the dang thing but was trying to just tilt it so he could get his doily under it to lift it. I hit the cement with both my knees and tore the meniscus in Both of mine. I have had Arthroscopic in both knees and it would have helped if Arthritis had not set in them. I am awaiting knee replacement now in my left knee. If you are young and do not have Arthritis you should be ok and it will help.. Stay Positive!
