Here is a review I wrote when Sims 2 first came out:

First off, this is a big game. How big? It comes on 4 cds. It took me about 30 minutes to install on a 12x cd-rom. Once installed, it will ask you to register within the game interface. This is nice because many other games require you to register via their website... I hate games that do that.

Startup was painless, and unlike previous sims games (and others), I have yet to run into any crash problems at all. It takes about 2.5 GB of space, which is huge considering Sims 1 plus 5 expansions took about that much.

Once inside you will be given the choice of 3 neighborhoods. The one I chose was "Pleasantville". The neighborhoods are HUGE. About three times the size of the original sims (without expansions). Once there I fould half a dozen families, community lots, and half a dozen empty homes. A new feature is the ability to click an existing home and just look around it. This is great for "house hunting" for your new sim families. I decided to take a hands on approach, and built an empty 2x3 lot. You can make small or huge empty lots and plop them down on any grass. Then I moved my sims into the plot and started.

Of course, before this you need to create a new family. This is just an AMAZING feature. First you create a family last name, then you create your sims. There is male/female, age (baby, toddler, teen, adult, senior), skin tone, and skinny/overweight. The "overweight" just gives you a small pot belly. Now the fun begins. You start by choosing a standard head, then you can edit the following:
-Hair style + color, Eye size + color, cheek bones size, cheek size, nose width+height, eyebrows, chin, etc.
-Glasses, blush, lipstick, facial hair
-shirt/Pants, or just a single outfit

Just a plethora of things you can edit. I have hours on each family. HOURS. Since it is all 3-D, it is not a matter of "swapping a new nose" for example: you can lengthen or shorten the nose... or make it fatter or skinnier, flatter or sharper... all on the fly. It's literally like playing with clay. As for clothes, you must now select different clothes for different categories. The categories are: Normal wear, Nightime/sleep wear, Formal wear, swimsuit, and jogging wear.

The final step is to choose an Aspiration and Personality. Personality is the same as the first one (playful/nice/active/etc). The Aspiration is the biggest addition to the game play. You can give you Sim a "money" aspiration, "family", "knowledge", "love", or "popularity". More on that later.

Once you get your family ready, you can move in. I chose the empty lot I built earlier. Once there, the building tool is about the same as it was before. However, you now have to watch out for slopes. For example, if your house is on flat surface but the front yard is a little lower, you can actually build 2-3 steps there. Or you can add a patio that is a few feet above ground. some cool stuff. Of course, I just go ahead and use the slope tool to make everything flat. Landscaping is way cheaper in this one than the original.

Most of the items are about the same, but with minor/major tweeks here and there. This is true for the gameplay in general. Here are some changes from Sims 1:

-Mirror now allows you to build Charisma OR change clothes

-Refrigerator does not cost money for you to get food. You now have to STOCK your food in the refrigerator. To do this you just call "Delivery", choose how much food you wish to stock, then they come and deliver it for you. You pay them the moment you hang up (if no one is there to answer the door, they leave the basket out front for you)

-No more "Room" points. It is now called "Environment". Remember, Light = happy environment

-TV can now be used to "workout" to build body points. There must be enough room for the sim to lie down and do exercises

-When you buy an Item (couch for example), you now get a dozen diffent colors to choose from for that item. So now you can buy the same bed for everyone, but with different colors!

-Theft alarm MUST be placed inside (not outside), and works really well. In sims 1, the thief gets a chance to steal stuff before the cops appear. I have not seen this here. And no reward money for catching the thief anymore

-you can now choose what to cook. The more cooking points you get, the more different kinds of food you can make! example: Sphagetti, cereal, mac+cheese, etc

-When the phone rings, no more "random money" prizes However, when someone calls and asks for your roommate, you can say "yes he's home" or "no he's not". If you choose "yes", the sim puts the phone on hold and tells the roommate to come answer it (which he will).

-Newspaper now gives you 3 job choices instead of 1 (I have not tried the computer yet)

-you can now "dance WITH someone" with a radio, which is very cool. Also, the music is heard throughout the entire room, so sometimes my sims would just start to dance even though the radio was on the other side of the hall/room.

-Different kinds of kisses (peck, smooch, romantic, make-out)

-When in the same couch, you can "scooch" closer to the other sim, and make out.

-You can have the sim "relax" on the bed... first they make the bed, then they just lay there on the pillow. If you have 2 sims relaxing on the same bed, they just talk to each other for hours. If they are romantic, you can kiss/cuddle/makeout... and "Whoopy" (ie intercourse). There is also an option for "attempt baby".

-After "Whoopy" the couple falls asleep in bed. When a couple is in bed (not just after whoopy), the one that got into bed last inches up to the other sim and snuggles with her, and they spend the rest of the night sleeping like that.

-Tables are MUCH better implemented. You don't need a HUGE table anymore to feed 4+ sims.

-Sims no longer automatically put their books away. Lazy sims put their books on the floor after reading them.

-You can eat burned or left over food, but you might get sick! if so, you need to spend a day or two just sleeping and relaxing. I took my sick sim to the bathroom... instead of using the toilet to pee, she puked.

-You can now Call off Work! Or call to Quit! You build "vacation" days as you work, and these are the used to take days off.

-Music has changed, but not quite for the better. It is still relaxing, but it is missing that 50's style music. It is okey, but the original music was way better.

-You can "throw a party" at any time with the phone. Right now I can invite a max of 2 people (the limit is based on available computer memory). Once the party "begins", there is a TIMER that appears and tells you the status of your party! It can be failure, not bad, good, excellent, etc! It lasts a few hours. When you throw a party, you can select WHO you want to invite (in sims 1, it was always random)

-You can now interact with the help! I got a sim to talk with the maid. After they became good friends, at the end of her cleaning she always said "I am done with my shift after this, do you want me to hang out?" I can call her to invite her over, and I can fall in love with her. You can do the same with the gardener, repairman, etc. Of course, talking to the maid during her shift means she charges more since she is hourly. Oh, you can TIP her too. But once the shift ends, she is treated like any other sim normally.

-You now have to buy a cabinet table before buying a dishwasher or trash compactor. These two items now go UNDER the table.

-Sorry folks, NO PETS

Yes.

The best bit ... must admit it was not long after I got the game. I hadn't read any indepth reviews - just watched the videos on the Sims 2 site - so was flabbergasted when my male sim got abducted by aliens ... then to find out he was expecting a baby! LoL

I like the way that they now seem to make sensible choices if you just sit back & watch them. I think that the graphics are wonderful.

I'm thinking about buying the Sims Life stories - Pets next though (instead of the full expansion pack) as the game does sometimes run a little bit slow on my pc & I have to turn everything else off to run it.

My daughter and I LOVE the SIMS!!! We have every variety out there, on the Game Boy, Game Cube, computer ... you take control of these characters lives, make sure they get to work on time, pay their bills, earn skill credits like mechanical and charisma ... and if their kids don't go to school, it's off to military school for them! When the new parents ignore the baby, Social Services will come and take the baby away, even! So new parents must decide who stays home to raise the baby and which parent goes to work. Each Sims game on each platform is different in many ways, but each one is fun and addictive ... I am 40 and play my SIMS Game Boy in bed every night before falling asleep!

I love the Sims series. I just hate having to wait up to 6 months for a game to come out on Mac and PC users already have it. But I love how it looks on the Mac so its worth it!

I LOVE the Sims 2. It's totally addictive. It's hard to explain but I can play it for hours on end - sad I know... I like decorating houses, having families and stuff but it is hard to explain the appeal - I suppose it's like playing God a bit...

I think it's fab fun and I've been using it to help a kid understand actions and reactions in personal relationships (he has a form of Autism) so it's educational too in an odd sort of way!
