Once upon a time there was an alcoholic who was instructed to watch the children while mom went to the store. To keep the little curtain climbers busy and to show the wife he could be a good sitter, he decided to teach them how to count backwards. As the children sang, he took another bottle of beer off the wall and passed it around. When mama returned home after several hours, there was no beer on the wall and the children were able to count backwards (of course they couldn't stand up either). The children took this song to school, sang it to their friends and it stuck. Now we have a nation of alcoholics.

Because once upon a time, people didn't shield children from the realities of life. "Ring around the rosies" is about the black plague in europe during the 14th century. In the original "little red riding hood", the wolf eats Red, and that's the end. She dies.

What's more, children in Europe are allowed to drink low-alcohol content beer, or wine, simply because that's the way it's always been.

I mean, at what age would you feel comfortable for children to know that beer exists? Should 21 years old be that age that children first hear about or see a beer? Don't you think that would be a little silly?

I don't mean to berate you, but sometimes this kind of thing bothers me. It reminds me of people who say that children shouldn't be allowed to watch "The Simpsons," because Homer sets a bad example. Of course he does; that's what makes it funny. If he were a model father, it would be an animated version of Full House, and no one wants that.

To sum up, I don't see how "99 bottles of beer on the wall" could possibly have any kind of negative effect on children. If anyone said to me in person that they believed that singing that song might driv some children to drink, I'd have to point at that person and laugh.

I sang it all the time in the car when I was a kid. I'm only 24 and things for kids have changed so much already. People over analize things so much. I'd be willing to bet that singing this song will not induce alcoholism in adulthood. If it is a concern replace beer with Pepsi.

I always sing 99 bottles of 'milk' on a wall ....99 bottles of milk on a wall... common sense just kicks in so just use your own judgement when singing any type of kid song to children.
