It usually is a condensation of their full name, it is a Latin American/Spanish thing to use it or a nickname. e.g. Robinho's first name is actually Robson. The "inho" in Portuguese (just like "ito" in Spanish) is a diminutive indicator. With so many people with the same name in the '94 World Cup you had Ronaldo (regular), Ronaldinho (little Ronaldo, he was 17 but didn't play), and Ronaldao (the older one). Ze Roberto is a condensation of "Jose Roberto". Latin players and people usually have many surnames in their full names anyways. Guti's name (on Real Madrid) is short for Gutierrez. There are good friends of mine whose real names I sometimes forget since I am so used to using their nicknames!

They are that good!! They only need one name. i.e. Ronaldo, when people say that name they only think about the Brazilian. There is no confusion with the portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo.

Because they're actual last names are about 5 names long. It's just easier to go by their first name or nick name since that's how they're most commonly known as.

Because all of them either end in -inho, -alho, -ao, -eira or something along those lines, and if they give them nicknames or just call them by their first, it's easier for us to differentiate.
