i have a new 250gb seagate (IDE)hard disk and i want to transfer those files from my old hard disk[ 80gb (IDE) ] to a new hard disk.

my pc specs are quite old, but i just want to upgrade the capacity of my hard disk for the mean time.
AMD Sempron 3000+
512mb ram DDR1
256mb video card.

Should i upgrade any hardware just to increase the speed of transfering/copying files? (am talking about, transfering from drive d: to drive c:)

What about transfering files to other pc, thru router? my LAN connection is just up to 100mbps. is there a way to increase the speed of transfering files?

please advice.

thanks

Most motherboards have two IDE controllers. If both drives are connected to the same controller then the transfer will be slower than if each drive is connected to a seperate controller. This is because a single controller can not read and write to two drives at the same time so the transfer is perfomed in series rather than in parallel.

Defragging the source drive should also increase performance, but I doubt the time needed to defrag would be worth it.

In the same PC, the only hardware speed you shoud be concearned about is your hard drive speed. If you can compress your files it will help significantly the transmission of the files, not only from hard drive to hard drive in the same PC, but also through your local LAN.

in case you elect to rather improve your device, you may purchase a clean processor because of the fact the cpu utilization peaks lots. in the experience that your processor is previous, you will choose a clean motherboard too for the hot processor. additionally a minimum of a million gig of ram. in case you do no longer choose to enhance, uninstall pointless classes, delete undesirable archives, do a disk cleanup, a disk defragmenter and run as much as date protection scans (anti-virus and anti-spyware) on your laptop.
