Dvds are more sensitive to read than cds are. Try using a cd(disc) type cleaner to solve this problem, run it a few times in the drive, as dust and/or smoke may have built up on the lens over time.

Try cleaning the lens with a q-tip dipped in alcohol.
If that doesnt work try re-installing the DVD software.
