We have stripped and polished floorboards in our house but for practical reasons (warmth, noise and a baby on the way) I would like to lay a carpet but wondered if there is a way to do this without ruining the floorboards so when we move we can just lift the carpet? Because of the size of the room the carpet would also have to be laid in three sections. Hope someone can help!

Thanks very much everyone. I will go for the double sided tape option. Just one more question though. Do I just tape the carpet directly to the floor or do I tape underlay to the floor and put carpet on top?

Yes you can
Just cut carpet to fit and use carpet tape(2 sided tape) for seams and perimeter. Just peel off when you move.
The only problems I can foresee is that you won't be able to stretch the carpet in the conventional way, and you may have to use some type of solvent to remove the carpet tape.

There is a closed cell foam padding that you can use under the carpet when you go to lay it down. It doesn't require a glue to hold it in place. Just cut it within 6-8 inches of the wall. You will have to use tack stips, or most carpets will not stay in place, or they may get bubbles, folds, etc. You can get tack strips that are minimal, they only require a few nails to hold them in place.

Another optioni is to check out factory carpet outlet stores. Many of the carpet companies make a carpet tile that doesn't require backing, adhesive, nails, to install (only if you are using in small rooms such as in a home). This may offer you an alternative that is easy to install. Another benefit, is that most of the carpet tiles offer industiral level stain protection (great with little ones).

Good luck...

Sure. Use double sided carpet tape. It works and the gluey residue can easily be removed when you take up the carpet. If you use small wood strips and nails, you'll need to also lay an undercarpet and the nails will have to go into your floor. We use carpet tape all the time
