I was looking into buying a certain tractor and I am not real familiar with these transmissions. How is this syncro shift different from a powershift transmission? thanks.

Synchromesh (synchro) gears allow you to shift gears without having to double-clutch. The synchro ring acts as a small clutch that brings the next gear in the box up to speed so it won't crunch as you put it in gear. Without this, you would have to put the vehicle into neutral between each gear change, release the clutch, rev the engine to the required rpm for the gears to mesh, then depress the clutch again, put it in gear, and finally release the clutch again. A lot of work for one gear change.

Cars use a "baulk ring", which is basically a form of synchromesh that prevents you from completing gear selection until the gear has sped up inside the gearbox. You can still crunch the gears on a synchro box if you try to shift too fast.

Powershifting (a.k.a. flat shifting, full throttle shift, or clutchless shift) is a method of shifting used with manual transmissions to reduce the time where the driving wheels are not powered. Unlike a normal gearchange in a manual transmission, a Powershift does not utilize the clutch at all, instead the gear lever is "ripped" from gear to gear. This type of shifting is mainly used in racing applications with gearboxes that have been specifically designed for this purpose. I have never seen a tractor or road car with a powershift transmission.

Hope this helps.

aussie is bang on about the synchro part but powershift transmissions in tractors are basically an automatic - they work well. my dad had a 1968 cockshutt 1750 that had a powershift in addition to the manual transmission - i believe John Deer had a full powershift available on 4020s etc

All modern manual transmissions use "synchronizers" to ease the gears together when you shift. synchros are why you are able to shift some vehicles without the clutch, so long as you are careful.
