Some senator lady said on the NPR she wants to take the cars away, have them impounded, (lotsa $) or have them immobilized. This is in Fl and is not law, yet. But she said it and it skeerz me. I can understand the why, but not all are drunk drivers that lose there licenses.

i live in Florida and they are trying to take everything from us so i guess this is just another in a long list of things there gonna take from us although i do have a license and all but if they can just take away our insurance policies with out any reason other than hurricanes ,or the animals you like to keep as pets, or the depth of your pool, than they can do anything
want to know whats really sad i have been trying to get the legislators here in Florida to change the ratio laws in day care centers because there out rageous and kids are getting hurt seriously hurt and sometimes death occures but they don't think that that is important here the ratios
1 years old 1 care provider to 10 kids
2 year olds 1 care provider to 12 kids
3 years old 1 to 14
4 year olds 1 16
and so on this is just a way for the state to make more money by impounding cars i am sur the money will go directly in to some bullship police force or other government branch that really doesn't need it any way Florida is becoming a terrible place to live i can't wait till my son is older so i can move...

I work a police impound yard in Florida. Each county is different, and each police department sets their own rates for impounds i.e. tow, daily storage, impound fee etc. If after 31 days the vehicle is not claimed, the impound yard/wrecker service obtains the car in order to pay the tow truck driver and give the police dept their percentage. If you do not pick up the car when you go to renew your license or register a new car , there is a lien on them, and you then have to pay the fees. Failure to pay results in revocation of your license. That is only fair, if you have a piece of junk car and got picked up for wreckless driving, and do not pick it up because the car is worth less than the fees, many people just dump the hunk of junk. The wrecker yard never gets paid, because these cars go to junk. It is the registered owner of the car to take responsibility. Also, many in Florida do not have insurance and will not pick a damaged car up. Therefore, it is the DMV's right to revoke a license. However, there are some instances, such as the elderly who have been involved in a fender bender. This is no lie, I have had older people come in to sign paperwork to have the car released to a garage and they can not even see the pen to sign, let alone see the paperwork that they have to sign. I worked for an ophthalomogist for years, and have seen elderly with cataracts or other eye diseases see just enough to pass the eye test 4 years later, they come back and can not see the big E on the eye chart , yet they are driving. I firmly believe that anyone over 65 should have to have an eye test at the DMV , no charge, if they fail they have 30 days to bring in a doctors statement stating they can still drive with new glasses. I firmly believe that any eldery person that has a car impounded or whatever reason, should have their license suspended until they have an eye test. Some are driving around and could be classified as legally blind.

i hear you that would cause some crimes.some people lose it over hitting a rough spot an dropping insurance or or something small yet other drivers who shouldn't even be allowed on the road (although licensed) continue to terrorize the public because their parent can afford to pay all there fine's an they have nothing else to do but take the course that will do nothing to improve there driving while others still struggle just to make it to work every day

Sounds like a good plan to me. If you don't have a license, then you don't need a car. It sure would put an end to the irresponsible who drive with no license and, usually, no insurance.

If your driving record is so bad that your license has been revolked, you shouldn't own a car anyway.

You only need a license to drive on public roads. The people still own the cars, and can drive them aroound their yard if they want to.

Yeah. It's cowardly hypocrisy to crack down this way on old people and not on drunk drivers. i know all the usual excuses employed by apologists for criminals and drunk drivers -- if you take their car away, they'll lose their job, etc. But again, it all adds up to no consequences for their actions. And that's just plain wrong.
