I work in an office for my uncle. I am 21 years old but I do not drive (yes I know I really need to get my license). Well because I do not drive I depend on my father to bring me into work. I get there on time every other day except friday because friday is his day off. I usually arrive to work 20 minutes late which bothers me so much. The people that I work with already expect that I will be late. I am not sure if it is the proper thing to call them before I leave or to just leave. I don't seem to think that me calling them will help them in anyway. What is the proper thing to do?

Be thankful that you are working in such a lenient environment. Most places wouldn't find that acceptable (yes, most are heartless, lol). If your coworkers know your situation and expect that you are going to arrive at a given time (a little later), then that's fine. I would just make sure your uncle knows the situation also, (which I am sure he does) and that it is out of your control. One thing you have going in your favor is the consistency - you know WHAT days you will be arriving late, and you can give a heads up about it. I would think that if you have informed everyone about when and why you are going to get there on what days, you should be fine. Me, personally, I would call anyway, just because it's common practice and considerate.
And good luck with your license!

I think you still should call. It is only respectful and courteous. I know it's your uncle, but there has to be separation from family issues at work. What if all the other employees showed up late once a week without calling? What would he do?

Maybe you should talk to your boss about changing your working hours on Friday, because of your transportation situation. This should be a temporary measure, until you get your license. That shouldn't take too long, right?

I think you need to talk to your boss and explain the situation. Let him or her know that Fridays are difficult to get there on time because you depend on someone else for a ride to work. Maybe you can start a half hour later and stay a half hour later.

Your boss/uncle might be fine with you arriving late. He may not be. He may feel you are taking advantage. So talking to him is best. You also have to consider the feelings of others in the office. They might feel that you are taking advantage. And they will start feeling differently towards you. Maybe talk to someone and ask if you can get a ride to work from them because you can't get a ride earlier on Fridays.

Well, what I would do is see if you can change your working hours so that you aren't late. Tell your boss that you are working on getting your license so that you can drive yourself to work. I am guessing that you make enough money to purchase your own car and don't have to be dependent on others for rides still.
Go to the DMV and get a drivers' manual and take your test!!!

Good Luck!

You need to call. I call my boss even if I am 5 minutes late. It just shows that you are being responsible. I didnt have my license for a year while I was working at my current job and had to rely on my grandmother to drive me or I had to take a taxi cab (which trust me are not very reliable) so my boss understood I would be late often but they appreciate the fact that you will call them.

What you are doing is regular and in most cases unacceptable, therefore yes you should call. However because its every Friday what you need to do is explain yourself once so that they know it show you respect your colleagues and are professional.

Because its your uncle's office if you do not explain your self you may be accused of being treated differently which is not right. work is work no matter who has employed you.

best of luck

You should call in every time, and if it is that much of a habit, you may consider changing your hours at work so you are early every day instead of late. You don't want to get labeled "the late girl" at work for sure.

If they know you are already going to be late, I think it is okay. If it bothers you though, maybe Thursday before you leave work just remind them that Friday is the day you are a little late.

It is proper to call if you are going to be late, even though you say that they know you will be late. If you are not on time, there is a question about you arriving at all.
So, call in every time.
