Sometimes they are really stiff, othertimes they flow in easily. Also i've noticed that when i'm going from 3rd to 4th, when I push the clutch in, it makes a high pitched scraping noise. Its not very loud, but its definitely there. The car is now 5 years old.

Any ideas? I've just paid out over £600 for service, Mot and all my breaks which needed doing and i'm dreading another huge bill!

Sounds like the thrust bearing is worn out in the clutch assembly. If the bearing is faulty the intermeshing of the gears can be affected quite badly, sometimes making it impossible to get the car into first gear. Usually the car will go into reverse OK as there is no synchromesh used for reverse gear. It is worth checking the level of oil in the gearbox, just in case it is low,as this will make gear selection tricky.

I would say the gear selection problems and the whining/scraping noise when clutch is depressed is probably a worn thrust bearing. This bearing presses against the clutch when you press the peddle. If it is worn it may collapse and therefore not activate the clutch sufficiently to fully disengage drive. You could check for this by putting the car in first gear when the engine is stopped then, with the clutch depressed and the handbrake off, start engine. If the car tries to creep forward with the clutch still depressed then this is probably the problem. A possible short term solution could be to simply take up any slack in the clutch cable either by adjustment or some sort of packing pieces where the sheathing stops and the cable is braced. Its a bit of a bodge but it might save you a few quid.

Polos need a new gear box/clutch around 70,000 miles mine did I'd take it in and get them to check the oil in it to see if it is low it cost me £600 for a reconditioned gearbox and fitting its really expensive so get it checked out before it goes and if you see white smoke coming out of your car stop immediatly as I stupidly carried on and wrecked the clutch aswell

It sounds to me like the seize has dragging quite badly quite uncomplicated exceptionally if its a duel mass flywheel. Do the gears interact pleased with the engine stopped? in case you position the automobile in equipment, carry the seize pedal down, commence it, and allow pass of the brakes, does the automobile flow ahead? (be particular you've sparkling area round previously attempting this- the automobile might want to lurch ahead as you try to commence it- like once you've forgotten this is in equipment if it does the seize is dragging and not in any respect disengaging desirable. it is going to then choose replacing. once you've a Tdi pd one hundred thirty the seize will value approx £600 to replace the seize and flywheel yet there's a conversion kit that converts it to a common seize.
