I remember watching cable in the late 1970's...yet today even with progess cable television is still not available in all areas, like rural areas. I understand that there is Dish Network and such available But why should we have to buy that when cable access is 5 miles down the road from us.

The proliferation of cable is based on simple theory... Profit.

To reach your home the cable company must first 'engineer' the technolgy for reaching that distance, then determine the cost to reach the distance and then calculate how many potential homes would purchase their service and what price. All these factors must be weighed against one another to determine if it would be profitiable. Keep in mind that for longer distances there has to be 'boosters' put on the line that will need electrical power (more cost) plus the cable company must either 'lease' the poles that the cable is hung on or bury the lines and 'lease' any public property they cross.

All these expense factors add up really quick and if there are not enough potential buyers (home) in a specific area to cover the cost plus a profit margin then a business decision is made not to bring cable to that area.

Hope this answers the question!

it IN some remote areas is not profitable to string and maintain miles of cable to serve just a few customers. Its not necessary to do that anyhow. Dish and Direct TV have satellite systems available to people anywhere they live and its comparable and in many ways better and less expensive than cable. I have had DISH and have Comcast cable and I have to say that DISH was better. You have trouble getting local stations with DISH and Direct but often times you can get them on antennas. You can have a wider array of stations on DISH than you can on cable and its usually ten to twenty Dollars less a month.

Fred the Dog nailed this one.....
The cable companies are just that....companies. They are out to make the most bang for the buck...it probably isn't cost effective for them to run 5 miles worth of cable to get to your area....now when a subdivision with 40 houses gets plopped right next to your property, now you're in business!

Supply and demand. Call the cable company to complain.

Who's going to pay for that 5 miles of wire? If you pay for it the cable co. will be glad to provide you with cable. It all about the money.

It just doesn`t make sense to run cable to just a handful of homes (cost prohibitive).
