The cell phone had its origin from 2 way radio communicator. it uses high frequency radio signals which shall be received by antennas kept at high locations. There shall be several antenna in a city or a locality. Each antenna covers a zone in the location and it is called a CELL. hence the name CELL phone. GPRS, GPS use this cell techonology.
Then came CDMA, which is similar to CELL, but the data is multiplexed as code in the same wave.

Alexander Grahm Cell... he spilled acid on his wireless home phone and it cause a strange mutation on the signal and caused to to tap directly into the phone line without the normal reciever need in your home

And GPS, Global Positioning Satellites, was for the military.
