What can I do to keep out unwanted guest? Large and small. They each have an opening of about 1-2inches.

Put plastic over the opening and then get a old broom stick or something of that nature and put it in the window frame so the sliding part will not slide .

Remove the window from the Sash, and clean the track, make certain there is nothing on the window to interfere with closing, also examine the sash for obstructions, also look at the home is it settle-ling, making the window too tight at the end.

The track at the bottom probably has ice or debris keeping it from closing or it may have worn a groove in the bottom track.Try lifting up when closing the windows...

My husband says there is trash blocking it.
So, I GUESS, just clean it out really well, of trash.
