wildcard just means any character if i wanted to search for a file and I knew it was say an excel file but didn't know the name I could search for *.xls the asterisk is the wildcard, if I knew the name but not the type I could do name.* and it would find all files named name regardless of extension, conversely *.* would show every file on your computer.

On pc's, the wildcard character, which is * , is used to do a number of things. It is primarily used from the command prompt to designate a certain class of files. Perhaps an example would explain this more clearly.
Let's say you want to list all the text files in a particular folder. You'd go to that folder, and type in (from the command prompt) dir *.txt (and hit enter). That tells the pc that you want to list any file which ends with the file extension of .txt .
Now, let's say you have a folder with a whole bunch of files, and you want to delete ALL of the files in that folder....you'd type in:
del *.* (and hit enter) That would delete ALL filenames with any file extension in that folder. Basically, these examples will show you that using the wildcard symbol allows you to handle files in large batches rather than one at a time. Hope this helps.
