The Tube is a mix of twelve lines that roughly cross from one side London to the other, with a section and stations through Central London.

In the suburbs its an overground service, much like any other railway but in the central bit its all underground - hence it being known as the Tube.

Although large parts of it are over 100 years old, its still surprisingly reliable. It does have its problems, but when its working properly its amazing. I live about eight stops from Central London and even during the day on a Saturday its unusual to wait more than 2 or 3 minutes for the next train.

The tube is the London version of what we call a 'subway' in the US. 'Railways' in the UK are generally considered city-to-city trains, more like commuter and long distance 'trains' in the US.

There are a few 'railways' that go undergound in small tunnels here and there, but generally the London 'Tube' (also know as the 'underground') is more like an American 'subway'.

Of course, all these words get mixed together, but basically that's the difference.

The 'Tube' is the nick name for the London Underground. A mixture of several light rail technologies some of which operate exclusively or partly underground (especially in the centre of London).

"The Tube" is the nickname of the London underground, called this simply because most of the lines in Central London are bored tunnels (or tubes). Incidentally, most of the London underground actually runs overground!!

The Tube in the Central London area is mostly underground. But in the Greater London area virtually all of them are above ground.
So it does both really.
