I own a Punto and have been having problems with the gearstick. It is very stiff and you have to really push it to get it into gear. Do other people have the same problem?

Check whether or not there is oil in the gearbox and check also the brake fluid because the Fiat clutch doesn't use a cable mechanism but a hydraulic system. If all fluids are ok then you have to check the Slave cylinder, which is situated in the gearbox and the Master cylinder of the clutch system which is situated beneath the brake and clutch hydraulic reservoir. If these two cylinders are doing fine then the problem will be coming from a faulty clutch, I'm afraid to say. The problem that the Fiat have with the clutch kits is, the Valeo company (clutch company that provides clutches to the Fiat and other motor companies) has made the trust bearing too small for the dimensions of the Pressure Plate and after an amount of mileage the mentioned trust will start drilling the Pressure Plate until all the Pressure Plate has been holed right through.

Hope this helps my friend.

I have had that sort of problem, where it's rather hard to get the car into second gear. I have since replaced the clutch, and at times it still there. But I have heard of this from of problem so many other Punto owners so I suspect that there may be a floor in the gear system.

Puntos aren't noted for having the slickest gearchange, but if yours has got worse, check the gearbox oil (not that easy, since you have to get underneath & undo the right nut) or it could be the clutch wearing out, or the clutch cable needing adjustment. Take it to a garage, but don't let them tell you that you need a new gearbox.
