I think the best invention ever has been electricity, it keeps us warm when we need it, cool when we need it, helps provide telephone service and so many other possibilities.

First, I want to say that I read a number of answers for this question stating that electricity is the best invention. No one invented electricity. It's always been there. It's a discovery, not an invention. Second, the best invention ever is the thermos. It keeps hot drinks hot, and cold drinks cold. How does it know? JK

I think the transistor is the best invention, It has allowed the development of almost everything you come in contact with today. You may not realize it but all memory cards, computer processors, TV's, radios, cars. The computer you wrote your question on. All of these are direct products of the transistor. There are other inventions that are really good too. Communications or the telephone, but it is still pretty much the same as it was 100 years ago. The cell phone is a big step forward but would be impossible without the transistor. You may not recall but cell phones started as bag phones, large bulky and heavy. All to me made smaller and smaller all due to the transistor.

The best invention ever has to be the concept of tool.

Almost everything (except, perhaps democracy and other government forms) arises from this concept. The basic machines (the lever, the wheel and axle, the pulley, the inclined plane, the wedge, and the screw).

Without it, we'd be doing everything with pure muscle power (and no mechanical advantage). That would also mean no microscopes, no ships, no vehicles, no carts, no weapons, no means of making fire (except from already-burning sources), no buckets ... a real hand-to-mouth existence.
