I've known him very closely for over a year and the other day he told me that he loves me on the phone.
we spent 2 hours talking about how he's fallen for me, and how he missed me so much when i stopped talking to him for like 2 months because of an argument, and how he "really really likes me" and then i let him down gently. When i asked him if this was a sick joke, he said "do i ever speak like this with you ever? no, so yes, im not joking"
and then, after those 2 hours, he ended up saying "you know what, you're going to hate me because this was all a joke, i needed research for a song im going to write..."
and yesterday, when i asked him about this so called song, he claimed that he gave up writing it.
Honestly, i think that he was being genuine when he said that he loves me, but then when i spoke to him afterwards, he also seemed genuine about how it was all a joke - so now i cant think whether he does have feelings for me...

This is important to me because when he and i joke and flirt, its usually innocent on my part, and i want it to remain that way...

Well if you don't feel the same way he does, then you really need to stop flirting with him b/c he IS starting to have feelings for you... that is totally obvious based on this question. If you truly only want to be friends, then you must start treating him only like a friend. You can't flirt or anything b/c you would be leading him on. Based on this question, I would say that you may have some sort of feelings for him as well--- other than friends. If you certainly don't, then please don't lead him on!

if he really meant what he told you, it must have been hard for him to say it - then you go ask him ' is this a SICK joke?' of course i would say its a joke! after how you made him feel he wont admit it for sure... but after all he might have been joking as he said.
If you feel something for your friend, you might try to start the conversation again by telling him that it would have been nice if he really felt that way (maybe if he feels the same, he would show entusiasm) .. If you dont feel anything for your friend, be glad he said its a joke and forget that conversation ever happened.

Dont believe him when he says he loves you if he is the joking type.You may end up being hurt.

he realy loves u.
he told u that it is a joke bcz he is afraid wheather u will become angry with him.
beleive me because i too faced the same situation and asked him seriously about what he told me and then he said he loves me.
ask him patiently then he will tell u the reality

Tell him to stop messing you around and tell you the truth. You shouldn't have to put up with your feelings being messed around, especially if it was really for a song.

i think he kindda likes u,but by doing that whole stupid thing on the phone with u,it gives u a easy way out,this way u can just be friends if u want,but stop flirting with him..
