Mars is especially interesting because it is the planet most like Earth. Because of that, its the most likely place to find evidence of life outside our own planet.

In addition, Mars is the likliest place humans might be able to live in the future. There is a lot of interest in other planets as well--but its the possibilities of finding life (or at least fossils of past life) and of an off-world place humans can live that make Mars so interesting.

They think that Mars is the most promising for supporting human life. (That is, it doesn't have as little promise as the other planets) They have all these plans like bombarding it with asteroids or making basically pollution factories on it, OR...Building giant mirrors out of space debris and concentrating the sun's light on the polar ice caps to release the gases trapped there. The idea is to thicken the atmosphere so that you don't need a pressure suit to live on mars--only a breathing apparatus. Anyway, it doesn't sound likely to me that it'll work, but I suppose it would be easier than colonizing the volcanic surface of venus or one of the gas giants. Hope this helps!
