in my fridge again this morning and it felt like there was some cold air coming in, and then i opened it and got a strong smell of freon, could this harm me if i continue to keep it plugged in and attempt to save all my food until my husband comes from work this evening, or will i get sick?

You'll not get ill from dissapated freon, but ventilate the room anyway. Unplug the freezer, cuz running it freon dry doesn't do you any good and may harm the workings.

Freon is oderless by itself unless the compressor burned out and burned the oil. It is also harmless unless it comes in contact with an open flame. It then creates fosgien gas. A ref only holds a few ounces of freon. Once it leaked it is too late. Plugging did not solve a thing. You need a new evaporator. Approx. cost is $400 to $700 to repair. It will make a good meat smoker.

I would try to find another fridge to use because any food you have will make you sick coated with freon. I know this from a past experience.

#1 If you can wash the food in plain water, that should keep it usable.
Depending on how old the refrigerator is, repairs are cheaper than a new one.
Optional: Call a repairman, and tell him what you did. It shouldn't cost much over $100 to fix it, and he should be able to give an estimate over the telephone.
New units delivered run around 5-600 and many will deliver and remove the old unit.
If you rent, get it fixed.

breathing in freon WILL hurt you, please unplug the fridge. best thing you can do is ask a neighbor to use their freezer for meats and other frozen foods and maybe put all necessary stuff from the fridge in a cooler
