Reminds me when back in the day, I used to walk to and from school, which was several miles away because my dad had no car and couldn't afford a bus or train.
It was good exercize.
You just need to bundle up with several layers and walk fast.
Your lungs will love you for this sacrifice.
This is what America needs more of...relying on
"shank's mare" instead of other transportation. You'll see all that excess fat melt away like a spring thaw...coming soon, hopefully...unless the Ground Hog is wrong..
Hope I helped a bit. (I still do lots of walking, even with my car in front of my house).

Dear Bekah,
My goodness, you sure do have a problem on your hands. 4 miles in such frigid weather is a dangerous thing to do, and with wind chills added, you are risking getting hypothermia.
If you absolutely cannot find another means of transportation, and are forced to walk to work, ( God forbid! ) you must layer your warm clothing accordingly.
Remember, "cotton kills". You need to have clothing that will wick away perspiration. When you sweat in extreme cold, you will most certainly run the risk of hypothermia.
Use fabrics like Thinsulate or Gortex to protect you from cold. If you are in extremely wet condtions, wool clothing is a real good choice. Even wet, it will keep you warm.
Head covering is imperative. Alot of body heat escapes through your head. Cover it as best you can, as well as your face.
You need gloves that are not only warm, but will wick perspiration away and stay dry. When your gloves get wet, your extremeties will lose heat and become numb.
Footwear- Good water proof and insulated boots are a must. Some Canadian manufacturers make some of the best in cold weather footwear. Companies like Sorrel make extreme cold weather boots. They can be rather pricey, but what is your health worth?
My suggestion to you is to get a car as soon as you are able. I think you are going to become quite weary of walking 8 mile per day round trips in all kinds of horrible weather.
Best wishes, and keep warm!

Sorry to hear about the situation.
Just dress really warm and tuck your head down. The cold thing is only if you come into contact with someone who is sick.
They have those hand and feet warmers.

Wow, I feel for you! The best thing is for you to bundle up in layers. You should carry a bag so that when you get into work, you can put your extra layers in there. Get a face mask to cover your face!

cover yourself with lots of layers, or take a cab a few times, make a deal with one you like, some will do it for say ~$5 or share a ride with someone from work headed there & give them a few bucks or buy coffee

Wear lots of layers. Also cover your head, ears, and fingers. If you can cover your face wtih a scarf to prevent wind burn on your skin. And don't forget to take your daily vitamins.
