Mainland China calls Taiwan a province of China. They have no military presence there but I suspect it will not be long before they install their army in Taiwan. President Chen Shui-bian had wanted to arouse the people of Taiwan to vote for independence from China but it didn't happen. Now that his wife has been implicated in a huge corruption scandle, it seems the tide is turning and the people will finally accept a peaceful reuniting with China. The Beijing government permitted air flights between mainland and Taiwan for the first time this February for family members to reunite during Spring Festival.

Nonetheless, it seems odd to call it a reuniting since mainland China has never had a good grip on Taiwan. Millions of Chinese people have moved to the island in the last hundred years or so, overwhelming the local people who are of polynesian ancestry. From the 17th century until now, the Dutch, Chinese and Japanese have occupied Taiwan at different times. None of these invaders ever really had a firm government on the island so when China got Japan to sign over Taiwan to them after Japan's defeat by the U.S. in 1945, it seemed a bit indirect at best since Japan never really controlled Taiwan.

At no time in its history has Taiwan acted in agreement with mainland China in trade, military development, economy or government. They even use different currency (Taiwan dollars).

The U.S. has always been the smiling guard dog in the relationship since 1945 but since President Clinton, the U.S. says they support China's policy of claim to Taiwan. At the same time, the U.S. sells high-tech military weapons to Taiwan that we would not dare sell to mainland China and complains to China about their massive build-up of the military which China clearly states is to "maintain the one-China policy". This clearly puts the U.S. and China in an arms race that will probably end with the U.S. giving up as they have spent too much on wars in the Middle-East in recent years. Ironically, a failure of the U.S. economy could lead to a huge recession in China since the U.S. is the largest consumer of Chinese goods. To try to counter this, China is cutivating "quasi-colonial" relations (building many hospitals, schools, hydro-electric projects and bridges) with many African nations and increasing trade with the European Union. That might help quite a lot to buffer their economy from a depression in the U.S. Meanwhile, the U.S. will be in no position to stop China from intervening in African affairs to exploit the huge natural resources there that can feed the gigantic manufacturing industries of China. After that scenario, China will be by far the world's only superpower with Japan and Germany towering over the U.S.

By the way, many Taiwanese people can speak "Mandarin" but they usually speak a Chinese-Taiwanese dialect that is mostly unintelligible to mainlanders. Their written characters also are not standard, simplified Chinese so most mainlanders cannot read a Taiwan newspaper.

Taiwan is a sovereign, independent nation. Its citizens enjoy a free press, the free election of their leaders, and the total freedom of assembly. China is a dictatorship. It's citizens do not enjoy (and may not even care about) the aforementioned freedoms. China is in the process of developing into a belligerent, arrogant superpower -- much like the US. Over the past several decades, it is Taiwan that has been the real caretaker of Chinese culture, in addition to a burgeoning Taiwanese identity. I stand with you, Taiwan!

that is simply by long status uncertainty of Taiwan's status. a lot of people purely prefer to become attentive to with a rustic/u . s ., its organic. considering China shares very lots of subculture, language, and similarities with China, the alternative is organic. many old Taiwanese think of fondly of the jap occupation of Taiwan simply by fact it became the final time Taiwan's status became no longer uncertain, it became element of a few thing: the jap Empire. do no longer permit some people make you think of all of Taiwan is like this. almost a million/3 of the rustic feels that Taiwan is a separate u . s ., ordinary and easy. the easy fact is this: the present government of mainland China has by no ability flown its flag or had governmental authority interior Taiwan. Ever ever ever. that's ordinary. i've got lived in Taiwan for 3 years now and that i'm able to declare that maximum persons at a minimum think of of China and Taiwan as separate entities.

china= rich, but slightly crazy bully, only rich because he sells his sister and mother. getting smarter, attending classes irregularily. forgets to learn from own mistakes in the past- occasional flashes of brilliance, may suffer from dementia from always looking backwards. suffers from delusions of grandeur and megalomania. very messy, smelly room. UIltamitely will screw up, fall on face messily in own poo if does not learn self-discipline, in its rage to steal toys and lunch money from taiwan. badly needs to focus on cleaning its own room and studying so it can pass the school's tests.

taiwan= small geeky kid everyone ignores until they need help with homework they dont want to do. but smarter than almost everyone else and does everyones homework for cash while they drink beer and screw chinas sister and mother while china is not looking. follows most major school rules, unlike china and lately usa, the 'popular' kids at 'global high school', formerly- mostly due to the sexiness of their sisters/moms and the coolness of their toy and game ideas that they use to entertain us. breaks small rules when he thinks appears nobody is looking. not a clean, tidy room.
Likely will be tripped over, causing the fall of china if china doesnt get serious about studying and following rules but insists on looking backwards at taiwans toy collection in envy, and forgets to clean its house and get self-discipline. will likely lose all his toys when china breaks everything in a megalomanical fit of rage.

Usa- a former most popular person in school, lost credibility and class president status after chronically lying about iraq and middle eastern countries, stealing toys and hurting their sisters. USA still has nice toys and may be forgiven if learns to tolerate short term pain, loss of face and apologizes to school publically. ambitious, but a poor liar. Honesty suits it and used to be the reason it was respected. currently likes to hide in own house and weep about a scratch it recieved from a stray arabian cat in 2001. infection may have gone into sepsis, affected brain. currently enjoys hunting rats and cats, but generally digging up all the flower bushes in arabias back yard, seeking revenge upon the cat that got away. prone to immature fits of unreasonable rage lately, perhaps due to the sepsis of fear inside USA's brain. Pretends to care about Taiwan, but is obsessed by cats and oil. Forgets that to keep their room clean they should create a new energy source and let oil be the backup, not the main source.
