is that for an essay? :p
you could write a book on this, for innate expression look at animals. Many expressions are cultural.

In some cultures frowning means a completely different thing ( I think it meant saying yes, can't remember the detail)

but i'm pretty sure "OUCH!!!" is a universal and (mayb innate thing?)

This is part of NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION....

It translates the state you are in...

Happiness can surely be expressed with a smile or even a laugh...

Sadness can be translated into tears and sad eyes...

Anger can be seen through a frawn over the eye brows...

seriousness can also be seen with a stagnant face with no expression to read at all aside from the fact as though someone tells you one is not interacting to any of what you say showing seriousness as such...

When you feel so in love with a gal and there is no chance to say it straight, your eyes will surely say it for you...Eyes talk....

Silence is also a sign of consent...This can be expressed with facial expressions....

Biting on lips show how uncomfortable you are....

Twisting a mouth and pressing on teeth shows how angry you are...

Examples can go on and on for sure...

Some of those FACIAL EXPRESSIONS are ACQUIRED / LEARNED & others are surely INNATE...

How can a a 3-6 months old baby understand how to show a facial expression of PAIN for instance when he / she is suffering from WIND / GASES and express it on a face...? This is surely INNATE...

But as that baby grow up, it becomes a matter of OBSERVATION...He / She notices Mom, Dad and others around him / her with what they do with FACIAL EXPRESSIONS and accordingly learn it with the days...

I think the above is convenient enough for an answer....
