We are in our 40's, our children are in their late teens, she was conversing with the girls of his crowd, most likely to get the lowdown on what was happening in their evening. Is this rude, bizzare, obsessive or all of the above?

I think since the age of complete acceptance of the mobile phone, and especially the text messaging system...respect and politeness have fallen by the wayside and our own selfishness has taken over. You see it everywhere, it used to be a problem to drive with your phone...now it is impossible to go anywhere without nearly being struck by someone with their phone stuck on their ear. Used to be a big question whether or not it was rude to answer/use your cell phone while out with others in a social setting unless an emergency...now that nasty ear appendage interrupts communication and socialization between others all the time, without as much as an "excuse me". Texting has been taken to new heights, by the teen population especially; we already had sullen, disrespectful, non-communicative teens, now they are allowed to outright ignore us, their teachers and any form of communication, if a text/call needs to be responded to( I had to ask my parents if I could use the phone when I got home from school til I was 16!). Even in the workplace, people I work with are carrying & constantly checking their cells and texting back people all during their shift. Our phone are strapped to our waists by professionals & soccer moms alike, ready for the slightest whim to answer whether or not it's a necessary call. When did it become acceptable to carry a cell phone and use it during work, school, etc? Now a challenge has arisen, when are kids "supposed" to get their first cell phone, well I would say the marketing department for cell phone companies has done their job...if our kids are counting the days til their first cell phone! The blackberry, two way messaging system, etc. is also portrayed in contemporary music & media as being acceptable to use or answer anywhere...you see moguls & executives diddling (I say diddling because they look like kids on a gameboy) on their 2 ways while in meetings or dinners...how rude! What ever happened to hospital non-usage...there are signs everywhere asking people not to use them, but everyone you walk by has one in their ear!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As I said, no respect, no regard...no problem...society as a considerate, functional whole is deteriorating very quickly and we are all contributing in one way or another! In answer to your question...YES, VERY RUDE! HOWEVER NOT BIZARRE, BECAUSE EVERYONE IS DOING IT!

Probably all of the above. I am a mid teen and a lot my friend's parents are my friends and I wouldn't feel strange getting a phone call from them. But if she is texting them while she is supposed to be spending time with you and is asking them what her son is doing, I would say that is all of the above.

Rude? YES!
Perhaps you should have turned off the movie and asked her if she needed to talk about this rather than texting and her being extremely distracted.

well it was rude seeing that she was spending the evening with you, however it sounds to me like she is trying to re-live her youth by communicating with the younger crowd (especially txting on a cell phone, because thats popular with the younger crowd)
