We have the Eureka Boss, which was give a high rating by consumer reports. It works very well. I love the hepa filter!
These are the issues I have with it:
The weight-it's not the lightest vacuum to take up and down stairs, and it's not ideal for cleaning steps.
bag refills and hepa filter refills: I have a hard time finding them (and it may be because they are always sold out), so I have to order them online. Usually I can find them cheap and then I don't have to go looking for them.
I guess it depends on what is most important for you.
The lighter vacuums include the Orecks.
Rainbow's are expensive, but they do an amazing job.
I wasn't planning on shelling out for either Orecks or Rainbows, so I am happy with my decision.

You can't beat a Roomba! As a robotic vacuum - it's the only vacuum that actually does the work for you. I hit the start button when I leave for work and when I get home the vacuuming is all done!! Check out www.irobot.com - for all the details.
If does take at least 5 minutes to clean out (brushes)after every 2-3 uses - but it's totally worth it.
Roomba's are very quiet and fun to watch. Everyone will want to come over and see your automatic vacuum work and you will never want to drag out your big old vacuum again!!!

I got a bagless vaccuum for a wedding gift and I hate it. It "sucks", and I don't mean that in a good way.
I actually use my 14 year-old bag vaccuum more and I can get 3 bags for $1 at the dollar store.
I do have a new Dyson, but I don't want to use it until my house is built.
I have heard from those who own a Dyson that they are great. If you have the $$, I would get a Dyson. If not, try to stay clear of the bagless.

We have a Eureka "The Boss" smartvac and are very pleased going on 2 years now. Most of our old vacuum cleaners ticked me off.
See link for consumer reports ratings.
