exactly carguy! I figure that companies must be able to make the shifter on the floor cheaper than the shifter on the column because the shifter on the floor is closer to the transmission less linkage

They are hard to find buy they are out there. A few mid-size American cars will have this, but they were usually special-ordered that way. Chevy Lumina, Ford Taurus, and very few Dodge Intrepids came that way. Any of those should get 27-30 mpg on the highway. I've never cared one way or the other about the bench seat, but why would anyone want an automatic with a floor shifter? It just doesn't make sense. Why waste that floor space that could be more space for cupholders, cd storage, or an extra seat?

Mercury Grand Marquis. I get about 27 mpg (almost all highway) but mine's rated at 17/25.
