High protein foods take longer to digest, so that means a heavier feeling in the intestines and blood being directed towards the work of digestion instead of in the muscles needed for dance. This is why dancers shy away from eating too much meat.

However, dancers DO need more protein than the average person in order to keep muscles and bones strong and healthy. So educate yourself about how to combine protein-rich plant foods such as beans and whole grains into single dishes in order to get the full complement of proteins that exist in animal foods, but which are easier to digest.

Avoid all junk foods and focus on eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy foods, whole grains, lots of soy products, and small portions of animal foods such as eggs, fish, chicken, etc.

You would also do well to eliminate all flavored drinks from your diet and just drink water or caffeine-free teas, as even something as basic as pure orange juice packs too many empty calories per ounce. Carbonated drinks, including "diet," are not good for your bones.

While your meat and dairy products should be low-fat, this does not mean that ALL foods should be low fat. Peanuts, for example, are great for snacking. If you can, avoid snacking on "health" bars, as they are packed with sugar and excess fat. Places like Whole Foods sell more healthful snack items made from unprocessed and organic grains, nuts and dried fruits. Those products are great for keeping your energy up during a day of dancing.

As for more dance classes, it depends on what you want to do with dance. High-school aged students who hope to become professional should be in class at least 15 hours a week.

There is a huge misconception in this country that we need tons of protein. Unless you're pregnant, lactating, recovering from surgery or extremely active (we're talking Olympic athlete here), you don't really need more than 4 oz. of protein a day. Most people get much more than that per meal! Even if you're a vegetarian or vegan, there's no need to stress out about it. Just try to include more beans, soy, and whatever nuts you like into your daily diet. Also try cooking with the grain quinoa, it's a great source of protein.

Dancers are constantly in dance classes. After all, it's their career.Talk to your current dance teacher and find out how many classes you should be taking. They would be able to tell you everything that you need to know regarding fitness, diet, how often you should be in class, etc.
