I think many people can offer good advice, and help, new ideas, and things you don't ordinarily think of. Then if they don't like the answer they can look at other avenues. If they do and others have helped that gives them new insights on places to look and things to think about. We should help those who ask homework questions, not get angry at them for asking. After all this is a place for questions. there isnt' a law that says they can't ask for help. At least they are trying. Perhaps they looked other places and didn't get enough info. We need to encourage their thinking.

Helping with understanding is great, because the student will learn the subject matter. If the student gains a greater understanding of the nature of the question or the assignment or the material, then learning is enhanced.

Simply providing the answer to an assignment is immoral. The student is cheating because the student did not do the work himself, and the person who helped the student cheat (by giving the answer) is just as guilty.

The student may get a good grade but the student will not learn the material and will not be able to do well later on a test or on anything that requires mastery of the subject.

I think a lot depends on *how* the question is asked.

If the asker posts what is obviously a direct quote of his/her homework question, a lot of people are going to react negatively to that. Also, if the the asker posts a really obvious question, the kind where the answer can be found easily on Wikipedia or in the first 10 hits on Google, people will also respond negatively.

However, if the poster asks a question that indicates that they have already looked in "the usual places" and they need more/better/different answers/information, then I find people are more willing to help.

I left school in the mid 1960s and despite my constant claim that algebra made no sense and I would never need it the teachers kept telling me otherwise. I am retired now and can honestly say that at no time in my adult life have I ever found any use what so ever for algebra. Never ever come accross it other than when my children and grand children asked about it whilst doing their home work. I say that the case I made with my teachers over 40 years ago has been proved. May I add that I have never met any one who has ever had need or has used it in their life bar one. It was a Mathematics teacher, I met once at a social gathering. Nuff said.

It is wrong to ask a bunch of questions to get someone to do your homework for you, however if you've put your best effort into answering the question and still can't find an answer then I think it's acceptable to ask other people for help. It's called research, although yahoo answers probably isn't the best research tool.

You know, i don't see anything wrong with asking questions about homework in here, but the real brain test is to reasearch and ANSWER some of the questions people ask. That is how u exercise your brain. Keep doing that homework!!!

It's not necessarily wrong, but it needs to be posted under the "homework help" category, not the category which you need help on. A lot of people will help; very few will do the work for you. I'm one of those. I will help all I can, but you're not going to learn anything by having people do your work for you.

If your question is worded correctly, such as, "can you direct me to where I can find information on ------whatever------" you'll get the responses you need. If you say, "write 12 pages on the beginning of humankind," you're gonna get slammed by a lot of people who will not help and will gripe about you not doing your own work.

Hope that helped a bit! :-)

You've stated your case well, but you still need to do your own homework and your own research. That's how you learn about the topic, learn about doing research and learn to look at things from differing angles all on your own. I've seen many serious answers to homework questions on here that were seriously wrong. Do we get blamed for the child's failure as well?

Nothing wrong with it at all - just so long as you realize that the answers you get here are incorrect as often as they are correct. So don't depend on just one answer or one source for information. That's a good idea even for an older and highly-educated adult, too.

It is okay. Y/A gives me a lot of help for my homeworks and assignments but sometimes there are abusers who take advantage of my questions. The purpose of Y/A is to give help to those who were uninformed and misinformed.

no because some answers could be wrong and you would still have to do reasarch to find more information abut the subject.
