Every one of my friends who bought from India through the web got burnt. Money gone and nothing delivered. Some bought at shops in India and asked for the items to be shipped. Here again they had a terrible experience. If the item arrived at all it was of inferior quality to the one they paid for. Most of the time it wasnt even sent after paying for it. I really dont know if this problem can ever be solved. I hear if you buy from the government emporiums you stand a better chance of getting the goods. Whatever you do, risk small amounts and dont buy large quantities.

BigNTall -- I absolutely disagree with what you're saying. I don't believe that Westerners make an unecessarily big deal about anything that is a small issue, and certainly not more than Indian people .. who I've observed have a custom of harshly judging and ostracizing eachother towards no more purpose than to create drama and spice up their otherwise tedious lives. There *are* many Indian women who don't feel that sleeping with someone before marraige will ruin their lives/worth .. maybe you haven't come across any because they didn't feel like giving themselves to *you*. And there *are* plenty of "westerners" who have no problem drinking tap water, but stick with bottled water in India for fear of contracting dysentary, or some other disease/bacteria that is in the Indian drinking water, that "western" immune systems are unfortunately not adapted to (please let me aplogize for the priviledge of growing up with clean water). Making generalizations about people will get you into a lot of trouble, my friend. Most people would agree that India is a place of extreme dichotomies with *many* different types of people. Making an ignorant judgement, especially without giving weight to the previous fact, will only make you look like a jackass. To answer the general question from my point of view -- You will tend to see more authentic style dress and jewelry on people in smaller town or villages, or if you're invited to a gathering at someone's house, since the younger generations and those in "world" cities tend to gravitate towards western dress. You can still find all these in most stores, though, so if you're interested in checking them out you'll have the opportunity. For the purpose of deciding what *you*, as a foreignor, should wear, conservative western dress is mostly acceptable .. especially if you don't look Indian. Yes, there are different people with different ideas about what an acceptable skirt length is ... but they're pretty tolerant towards tourists, as long as you don't look like you could be from there and are not directly insulting.

This isn't something we can discuss here.
Also need to know what type and for which country. There are tons of varieties.

They are not all that computer savvy to have websites and all. Even the best are not reachable. As business flourishes without that. I did try one that I know has good quality. They don't even mail in India. Says , come , pick up. :-( . Want cash down.
Also all are scared of Net. Youngsters are venturing out on Internet..

Try SIA at SILVER PLAZA , Santa Cruz, Mumbai. they have a fantastic collection of costume jewellery and their stuff is used in Hindi films too. I buy my jewellery from them whenever I go to India...every year. Its really lovely stuff believe me. Take a trip there and see for yourself.

I can understand. I have the same reservations about buying things online. There are a few reliable places, but those will be expensive. It would be better if you could find an Indian store near you. But here are the sites:

www.sheetalindia.com
www.sahil.com
www.seasonsindia.com
www.benzerworld.com
www.amarsons.com

These ones I'm not so sure about. You'll have to determene their reliability yourself.

www.kaneesha.com
www.bargelloshop.com
www.pagli.com

Cant help. The best thing is to go to Goa where the jewellery is fantastic, real gems at very low prices. You would realise your airfare.
