smartalec, that's kind of right, but not entirely.
For GSM phones, there are 3 types of data connections:
GSM data (runs over the voice channel, kind of like 'Dial-Up', but for a cell phone)
GPRS - Packet data, works kind of like a defragmentation on your computer, it clusters data and sends them in packets. It's faster than GSM data. EDGE is an accelerated version of GPRS and can achieve 200-350kbps
UMTS - the technology commonly referred to as "3g". It runs on a higher frequency (2100 MHz, sometimes called WCDMA) and is considered a "broadband" technology. It has threshold speeds of 7.2 MBPS, but anything 1.8 or higher is generally classed as "HSDPA"
HSDPA - A name for the latest revision of UMTS, generally has threshold speeds of 3.6 or 7.2 Mbps, and supports simultaneous use of voice & data (i.e. using the internet or e-mail on the phone while talking, say with a headset)

I thank God that I have no hatred for another human being, having said that there are many times I dislike certain things that people do and I am sure some people feel the same way about me.
