Wilkinson or Woolworth's sell bags of salt crystal (basically sillica) You buy a moisture absorber box which is a plastic mesh lidded tray which clips onto a clear tray. The crystals are placed in this tray and absorb moisture from the air. The water then drips into the tray underneath. The trays are about £3-5 each and the salt bags about £2-4. But they really do work. We've got damp in a cupboard but the moisture absorber box dried the walls in a week.

Once the salt is spent its safe enough to dump the contents down the toilet.

The crystals are called silica. you will usually notice a little pouch in the box when you buy shoes. this is to absorb any moisture in the air and to stop the product from getting spoiled.
