Is there a question there?
I know a LOT of people, including myself, that helped, or are still helping, Katrina victims. I think a lot of the problem is that many of the Katrina victims don't want to help themselves. They are so busy complaining that no one is helping them and how hard done to they are that they aren't even trying to move on with their lives. They want some magic fairy to come in and wave a wand until they have lots of money and a new house. They want someone else to take care of all their problems and not have to do anything themselves.
I understand how devastating the situation was and how ill-prepared the nation was to clean it up. I have family and friends that were affected by Katrina. They accepted the aid that was offered and rallyed to get more donations. They worked really hard to clean up what was left of what they had and they helped as many people around them as they could. There are just a lot of people left that won't help themselves. I don't know what we can do with them.

That statement is about as false and misleading as it gets. There's been millions of dollars pumped into the regions hit by Katrina, both private and public. The problem is that most of the so-called victims are looking for a handout instead of a hand up. Didn't I just read in the newspaper that somehow, 10,000 people collected federal benefits from a New Orleans neighborhood of 660 homes? That would mean 16 people living in each home, Yeah Right! HERE'S YOUR SIGN!!!

Don't want to help?!?
What sad little world have you been living in??
BILLIONS have been collected and donated to the tragedy. Hundred's of millions more donated in the form of equipment, food and other resources.
The Army Corps of engineers have worked tirelessly re-designing the levees. We brought experts in from the Netherlands to assist.
The government relocated more than 9000 victims at our cost.
Where the hell do you get off saying we don't help Katrina Victims??
I think you need to wake your *** up, reality waits for noone.

You are way off here. Millions upon millions of dollars have been set aside to assist. It is the corrupt and inefficient distribution system that has failed. Look to your federal, state and local officials for the failure. I would think that those citizens effected by Katrina would all be in the streets in their town, cities and in Washington demanding accountability. The system has stolen your money...aren't you just a little bit MAD?

Ok, while there are some excellent and valid answers here, let me chime in.
First off let me say this...people....please don't put people down because some live in areas prone to hurricanes. What about the people that live in areas that get hit by tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and volcano eruptions?
And, for the rest...I have to agree. You have to want to help yourself...and not take advantage of what is given to you.
Oh, and just where were the black people in other areas? Yes, there were SOME who helped out. But it should not have been up to the taxpayer to pay for things that should have been provided by others. I, myself(and family) cleaned out our closets to give to those who had nothing. But then...we were told what NOT to donate...the evacuees started getting little bit too picky. And the more they received....the more greedy (and picky)they got.
And where were the black entertainers??? I can recall more white entertainers supporting N.O. than blacks.
BTW....if any of you watched the millions that evacuated during Rita.....and were caught up in heavy traffic trying to get out of harm's way....I and my family were in all that. We were smart enough to know when to leave. Although I left with my elderly parents very early, it took us more than 8 hours to make a 4 hour drive. My husband and his brother left a few hours later....and it took them 36 hours to make that same drive!
And finally, my heart went out to those homeowners who for years paid into their insurance policies...and ended up having to SUE in order to get what they had coming to them! Much of the area could have been rebuilt a lot sooner if the insurance companies didn't get so greedy....and paid the homeowners what they should have.

Maybe it is because the 9th Ward of New Orleans was built BELOW sea level and a major flood was inevitable and it was populated mostly by criminals who during evacution actually felt the need to steal TV's like there was anyplace to actually use them. And since most of them ended up in Houston, that poor city has seen it's crime rate skyrocket. Katrina was like a toilet that just doesn't flush completely

Oh Horse Hockey! Americans have donated countless millions in money, clothes, building supplies, and hours to help the victims. The only one whining are the either the politicians who are trying to scam even more money to go to their pet projects or those who would not help themselves at all.

The government and FEMA has sent a lot of help.
Much of it got detoured to places it should not have gone or
like with the case of the trailers got caught up in a lot of
bureacracy. Also, Governor Blanco used thousands of the dollars to remodel her office.
Louisiana had way worse devastation than New Orleans but they just pitched in and cleaned up and didn't make a political issue out of it.
How many of them were given lots of money and blew the money instead of using it to improve their life. I believe that did happen because I know lots of people who waste their money and then expect others to feed and diaper their kids.
Think about it it has been how many years and IF by now they are still down and out they are only looking for a hand out.
Many people have catastrophy in their life and they bounce right back because they make it happen.
Give a man a fish he is fed for a day
teach him to fish and he has food for life.

New Orleans in my view was run by the under world sitting in French Quarters. The levies as I heard were let go just to save French Quarters from flooding and destruction.if this is indeed true then what the Mob is waiting for they should reach in their deep pockets and reconstruct the place. After all they are the ones who are going to make tons of money.THE MOB MUST SHOW ITS GOOD FACE IF THEY HAVE ONE.
