APART from the colour, and it is not white it should be wide mouthed
The white is much larger and eats grass and the like,
The black is more wrinkly and has an over hanging upper lip so as to eat shrubs and the like.
My favourite is the little Java rhino.

It's nothing to do with colour

The Black Rhino, also known as the Hook-lipped Rhino, is actually grey but often looks darker becuase it wallows in mud and so earned the name Black Rhino.

The White Rhino is a mis-nomer. The Name comes from a corruption of "Widje Rhino" ("widje" is an African word for "wide"). "Wide" refers to it's upper lip which is much wider and squarer than that of the Black Rhino (the White Rhino is also called the Square-lipped Rhino). The White Rhino is actually the same colour as the Black Rhino.

The difference in the upper lip is one of the easiest ways to tell them apart.

The white rhino is likewise observed as the sq.-lipped rhinoceros. in certainty the 'white' comes from 'widje', the African notice for huge, pertaining to its mouth. With the ideal formed muzzle for chomping grass on the flat grass lands of Africa, it is going to fortuitously munch via day or evening. Its bigger lip isn't hooked like the black rhino's. yet another distinction is that the white rhino has a hump on its neck and its head is longer. The Zambezi river originates in Zambia, (I lived there )and working for a length of 2700kms, it starts off it’s journey as a trifling little spring interior the corner of north-west Zambia interior the Mwinilunga District. It bubbles up between the roots of a tree, very on the edge of the border the place Zambia, Angola and Zaire meet.

The white rhino is actually called a wide lipped rhino, the wide has been changed over the years to white, so the other 1 is called black. If you look at the mouth of a "white" rhino you will see that its top lip is square shaped, the top lip of the "black" rhino is more pointed. that is how you tell them apart, it is nothing to do with the colour.

I know a load of crap me.

The white rhino is really not white - it is grey just as most rhinos, including the "black" rhino. The translation was not a good one - the natives called it a WIDE rhino, referring to the mouth. Those who thought they understood the language thought it was WHITE rhino and never bothered to correct it when the misinterpretation was discovered.

If you check out http://www.rhinos-irf.org/ you will find detailed info about all five types of rhino. Actually the White rhino comes from the Afrikaans name for it which refers to its wide mouth, the Afrikaans word "weit" which means wide was misunderstood by English speakers as white! and then it is believed that the black rhino was so called to distinguish it from the white rhino. both are misnomers. thought you might find that interesting. details about physical characteristics can be found at above site.

Main difference is whether they browse or graze. One has a pointed lip for browsing (i.e. eat at shoulder height off bushes and trees) and the other flat lips to graze grass.

The names are actually an muddle between the translation from Dutch/Afrikaans and English, the colour difference is not really noticeable

White are larger and more docile, black are mental and will fight with anything. Black rhinos are more rare too - endangered even.
