To clarify my statement on another question: for those of you who aren't aware of.....when a person pays their flood insurance...it goes to FEMA! You pay the government to insure your property. FEMA would tell people the damage was done by wind...and the windstorm insurance companies would say it was flood. The people who did have all kinds of insurance could NOT get what they were due. That is why they had to sue. They should not have had to do that. FEMA didn't have a problem with giving out how many 'cards' valued at $2,000 each to those who really did not deserve it. While those who DID deserve it...couldn't get a damn dime! Those who wanted money from the government should have been required to apply for a low cost 'loan.' You can do that even for contents of a house. My dad did that many years ago...but I would never do that again! What a crock!

Instead of getting a better levee built years ago, the people of New Orleans opted for casinos, then came this horrible storm with all the flooding. We should make sure that New Orleans has the right kind of levee built this time! We sent billions of dollars over to Iraq and no one can account for that money and the President wants billions more sent to Iraq. Why can't we make sure the people of New orleans get what is badly needed there, starting with the proper levee!

If your discussing Federal tax dollars then criticism regarding the misuse of funds should be directed at the federal workers (elected officials and Buereaucrats) responsible for approving and distributing those funds. In his post-Katrina Jackson Square speech it was BUSH who claimed that there would be effective oversight.
As for where that money could come from? You'll have to ask the REPUBLICANS thjat question. Katrina happened AFTER the GOP majority passed the transportation bill (remember the birdge to no where). Afdter the storm it was Tom DeLay (remember him) who refused to reconsidered the thousands of earmarks stuffed in the bill to offset the costs of Katrina.
Likewise it was the REPUBLICANS who advocated and defended the largest federal program of the last twenty years (The Iraq Project). Part of that project involved the U.S. taxpayers paying to build an Olympic sized swimming pool at an Iraqi police training center. We probably could have used that quarter of a million helping our fellow Americans.
And regarding the comment about residents suing. So what? In our (nation) everyone has the right to be heard. And the validity of ANY law suit should not be cynically dismissed without first hearing both sides.

" Should American taxpayers send more money to Katrina victims "
No, absolutely not.
Millions upon millions of dollars were given to people for 134,000 houses that never existed prior to Katrina.
PS... You know, I need to revise my answer. With everything that has occured in that region sometimes we forget who *all* of the victims of Katrina were. When it comes to the people of Mississippi and certain areas of Louisianna I would say yes. We can not judge these people based on how the majority of the people fro New Orleans behaved. I would NOT give one more penny to the City of New Orleans. In fact, I would send them a bill from the American taxpayer. I would then use that money to defray the costs to the cities and communites that took the "refugees" in. Our good will was exploited and our generosity was abused.

I remember reading that alot of the money was used for non-katrina issues, being spent on personal benefits for individuals in positions to get access to donations. True or not, (I like to see physical evidence before I point fingers), It makes me sick. Though I agree with what was said above, that an issue like this would have happened be there liberals in government, or republicans. Ultimately, there are still people in society that only look out for themselves, despite the tragedy that occured in New Orleans.

If my house somehow gets hit by a tornado, should I sue the government? Since when did the government get into the insurance business. They should move on, get out of the flood plane, bite the bullet.

No we shouldn't.......... If they had no insurance that's their own fault.I sent aide to them and to find out they were scamming was a slap in the face.
If someone has a fire with no ins. they are **** out of luck, if someone wrecks with no ins. He is fined and his car is just gone, So why should we pay out to them, when they didn't have ins. or enough coverage.
They were given housing to use with rules. They tore the places up. They should be ashamed. That will effect the next victims....
I would still help those who had ins. But got screwed.

"
Well, the problem that I see with that statement is that there were at least two major insurance companies that found sneaky ways to not pay out damages.

Nope. I don't know when or how everyone decided that the government should take over for insurance but it is silly.
