I am told that Freemasonry exists to bring enjoyment to its members and give charitable assistance to the community. Does anyone have good or bad experiences regarding Freemasons that they would like to share with us?

I am a Freemason. Your first sentence in your question is correct. There is nothing negative about being a Mason. Anyone that tells you there is anything evil about it is lying or misinformed. Email me if you have any questions.

Ecky Boy I am a Mason I promise you that you are completely wrong. Mason do not help each other the ways you say. It goes against everything that is taught in a lodge. If some Masons do those things i would be shocked. Because i don't know how they would ask for a favor. If an other Mason asked for a favor of that kind to ANY Mason i have ever met he would be very insulted and try to get him expelled for the fraternity. Being a Mason id all about being honest trustworthy and charitable. Please email me with the name of anyone you know to be doing any of those things. Or the place where you heard the story.

At the end of every lodge meeting at my lodge the last thing said is:
"Remember you are someone impression of Masonry so always act in a way that reflects positively on the fraternity"

Please feel free to email with any questions

I have been a Master Mason for more than a year. Freemasonry is a worldwide fraternity that believes in brotherly love, relief and truth. It requires a belief in a supreme being, but does not prefer any one religion over any other. Freemasonry has several goals, including helping good men become better men, and practicing charity. In the aggregate, Freemasony contributes over two million dollars a day to charity.

Members do not seek advantage from other members -- the previous statement about folding employment applications in a certain way is rubbish -- and prospective members are screened to make certain that they do not have any expectations about personal financial gain by joining the fraternity.

In my own personal experience, being a Freemason has caused me to examine my own personal beliefs and to improve my own sense of self.

Freemasonry is an oath bound fraternal order of men which derives from the medieval fraternity of Freemasonry. We adhere to many of the Ancient Charges, laws, customs and legends of operative Freemasonry. We are loyal to the civilian government under which we exist. We inculcate moral and social virtues by symbolic application of the operative stonemasons' working tools and by allegories, lectures and charges. Freemasonry obligates its members to obey the principles of brotherly love, equality mutual aid secrecy and confidence. We have secret modes of recognition that permit members to recognize each other as brothers. We require a through examination into the mental, moral and physical qualifications of a petitioner and we admit men into the fraternity by secret ceremonies based in part on legends of the Craft.

Once a person has decided to apply for membership he fills out a petition signed by 2 members of the Lodge he desires to join. He gives the petition to one of the members along with the required initiation fee. The petition is read at the Lodge's next stated meeting when the Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committeee to interview the petitioner in person. The investigating committe will report back to the Lodge at the following stated meeting when the members of the Lodge who are present will vote on accepting or rejection. Once the petitioner is accepted by the Lodge he is given the three degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. There are certain requirements a candidate must meet before he can proceed from one degree to the next.

One must obtain the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason before he is allowed to wear any Masonic jewelry. One must have a Belief in a Supreme Being. The tenets of the Masonic Fraternity are " Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. " The Masonic Fraternity is NOT a Secret Society but rather a Society with Secrets. No matter what you might have heard the Masonic Fraternity is NOT Satanic in nature and HOLY BOOKS pay a strong part in the Masonic Lodge.

Suggest if you are interested in pursuing interest in the Masonic Fraternity if over the age of 18 you contact a man whom you know to be a Mason for further information and an application. If you are under 18 you can inquire about the DeMolay Organization.

If you are a Lady the Masonic Fraternity offers the Order of Eastern Star if over 18 or the Order of Rainbow Girls or Job's Daughters if under 18. For requirements for joining these Ladies Organizations suggest you contact the local Masonic Lodge or Grand Lodge in the State you reside as requirements vary from State to State.

If no local Masonic Lodge is available then you can contact the Grand Lodge of Masons for the State you reside in for further information.

" Not Ecky Boy " has some wrong information by the way.

Why don't you see if you can get invited to join the Masons so you can learn about it from the inside? The Masons in all the places I've lived these past sixty years have always done good, supporting community activities that enrich the lives of children, aiding those in distress and promoting the principles of democracy and justice. I am not aware of any negatives regarding that brotherhood. And I believe they have every right to pick and choose whom they will accept as a brother mason just as my war veterans' organizations have the right to limit our membership to our fellow war veterans.

They are not really sinister in any way. I always think of them more like Laurel and Hardy in "Sons of the Desert", -a sort of club for boring middle aged men. And they DO do a lot of good work, (mainly for other masons, admittedly).

When a freemason applies for a job, he folds the application in a particular way. The person recieving it, if he is ALSO a mason, recognises this immediately.

If someone says they are going to "square things up" or "level with someone" , or says that someone is "on the level" these are all "secret" phrases used by masons.

Incidentally feemasons refer to people who are NOT freemasons as "The Profane" , which is ,I suppose, mildly insulting.

BUT like i said there is no real harm in them.

The only situaltion you need to beware of, is if two identical candidates apply for a job, and they are both equally qualified for the job. If one if a freemason, he will have the advantage ( assuming that the person doing the selecting is ALSO a freemason)

my friend's uncle is a freemason and I know that he opens up his (very nice) garden to visitors every year and does a dinner in a big marquee as well. All the money raised from this goes to local charity but I don't know which charities or if they change every year.

A club just for men that doesn't like to admit what they get up to?
I suspect they all go for a circle jerk off and don't want their wives to know.
