A bridge in networking is a simple device which allows two networks to send data to one another. In another words. Using an IP address- that computer pertains to a particular network. To talk to a different network you would need a router- or for one particular network you could use a bridge. This is most used by small companies that have several computers that would not fit on one address space... Not commonly used! A router is so low cost now- so It is more reliable and flexible!

When setting up a computer network, all computers on the network have to share a common group of IP addresses. Meaning that the first three sets of numbers in the address will be the same. (Such as all the address will be 192.168.000.xxx).

Because the last digit (the xxx in our example) is limited to number between 000 and 256, a network that has more then 256 devices on it would run out of IP addresses.

A bridge is a hardware device that allows to networks that do not have the same IP address to talk to each other as if they are one single network. This allows for networks with more then 256 devices. A bridge is similar to a router (in fact most routers also to function as a bridge).

Both above are some what correct. A bridge is a common connection between your NIC cards that do not connect to the Internet, but are used to connect to your Local Area Network. This is most common in PC's that have more than one NIC installed, or those that connect to the Internet via USB. Hope this helps
