Signal regeneration, in computer networking, refers to extending the length that a network signal can travel. For example, an ethernet cable is only able to carry a signal about 300 feet (100 meters). The effort needed for the signal to travel through the cable will cause it to degrade to where it is no longer readable.

A hareware device, called a repeater (amoung other names), can be placed in the ethernet line at the 300 foot point which will capture any signals coming over the line and rebroadcast (regenerate) them at full strength, allowing them to travel another 300 feet. This extends the length of your signal to 600 feet. A standard router can be used as a repeater.

Same can be done with a wireless network, by placing a wireless repeater near the outer edge of the wireless coverage area.

Signal regeneration is the technology that makes it so lights turn green in succession as you drive down a long street with lots of traffic lights.
