changed the head gasget and lost the paper that had the torque setting on it now cant find it

If it is the K series engine

Headbolts are tightened to 1st stage - 20 Nm or 15 lbf ft

Then turn thru 180 degrees(2nd stage) and then a further 180 degrees(3rd stage)

Make sure you tighten in correct sequence

Its not that critical. Do the nuts up working from the middle outwards and from one side to the other and do a final tighten up in the same order using a fair amount of strength until they feel solid. Run the car for a few miles and then try to tighten again - they may go a bit more.

Is this a cast iron head of ther old leyland type, of 1098cc or an alloy K8 type head1113cc
Cast iron head 40lbs ft or 50lbs ft if studs have an a or v on them alloy heads use angular torque as has already been answered, any garage can give you these from a autodata book

As Jamand says but make sure you use new headbolts, you wouldn't want to snap one and have to start again.
