If you are going to make your pond bigger and deeper then i would suggest you purchase the best quality liner you can afford.
Your fish will be OK in a water butt providing you keep the water
aerated. Before you decide on the size please take into consideration the possibility of young children or family pets
falling in it. Good luck with the project.

No doubt you can house the fish in a bucket or two for a few days, just think fish bowl, fequent water changes, airation and I wouldn't feed tem but every other day at most.

Great expense to alter the pond? That really depends. You may have a large enough pump now but will probably need a new larger pump and that would be the largest single pricetag. Consider also the cost of the liner and if you will need to buy rock or if you can collect rock for the sides. The liner will depend on how deep you make your pond and that of course depends on your normal yearly weather cycle. 18" may be deep enough or you might want the new section to include a cold weather well. Also you have to buy the liner based on the largest deminsion in each direction so a square or rectangular pool is the cheapest per gallon, but usually can be a bit boring to look at compared to a shaped pond. Google up pond liners and you will see what I mean. The costs are not that great, but can add up.

Best of luck with it

Keeping you fish in a container of some kind for a couple of weeks won't do any harm - just make sure you keep the water circulating and aerated. The new pond your proposing all depends how you want to build it i.e liner, concrete/block/render, what filtration system to buy, bottom drains, skimmers how much pipework and valves you need etc.

I enlarged my pond a few years back. I found that my dustbin was a good sized container for the fish and they came to no harm.
It is worth investing in a quality liner as the cheap ones tend to perish after a short while.
Good luck

really it depends on the number and size of the fish and the size of the bucket and whether or not you are going to be able to aerate it or filter it.
