Windows XP uses the S.M.A.R.T. function embedded into the core of the hard drive. SMART monitors the condition of the hard drive and reports that condition to OSes that can use it. When SMART sends a signal stating that the hard drive is close to a failing point, WinXP will get that signal and not allow you to install to that drive. Microsoft has screwed many things up, but this is ingeneous since it saves you wasting time setting up a drive that is on it's last leg. I recommend http://www.geeks.com and http://www.pricewatch.com for finding a replacement. With today's low prices, bigger drivers, and faster read rates, it is an upgrade well worth the money. Hope this helps

check you cables etc as the other guys said. then when you boot up, get into bios, make sure it sees the hard drive first, not the cd or disc drives. good luck

Make sure your hd's cables are connected tightly. Just unplug it and then plug it in again. Otherwise you may need to purchase a new one

If its an old disk, sounds like it could be dead. If its a new disk, then it sounds like you installed it incorrectly. Check your cables and power connections.
