I have a Sony Ericsson K800i and an 18-month contract with Orange. Can I ask Orange to unlock my phone so I can use it with other networks when abroad? How much would this cost?

My local "mobile phone and accessory shop" will unlock the phone for £60, but I think this is awfully expensive.

Any alternative solutions?

you need to chat up a guy who works in an independant phoneshop, they have gadgets that can do it seconds, if you look anything like your avatar that shouldnt be a problem

When you go abroad - phone Orange at least 7 days before you go and they will open international roaming on your phone. They shouldn't charge for this service. However do check with them all costs involved for making calls and texts and receiving calls and texts.
You 'local mobile phone shop' is exorbitant - if they unlock your phone that means you can use any network (ie going from orange to o2,t-mobile etc) Bear in mind if you do this within your contract you will lose the warranty of your phone.
When you want to unlock it - do it online with various websites - usually around 5 or10 pounds!!!!!

Hope helps!!!

Hiya, I have the exact same phone and also on the Orange network. I phoned Orange about the same question and they quoted £20 to send the unlock codes!!!. To be honest the bloke who I spoke to said it would be cheaper to take it to any shop that will unlock phones for between £5/£10!!! Goodluck

You cannot acquire these free of charge. You have to purchase either an unlocking device, or a code from the service provider it is locked to as they vary for each phone and service provider the phone is locked to. So cool that you can buy 'em on ebay.
Cheer!
