Its called efflorescence, it is the salts coming out of the clay that the bricks were made of. You can get a solution from DIY stores to stop it happening.

Salts in the bricks. If they are old stocks bricks...rustic looking then you can expect this and it adds character to the building. However, if they are relatively new the last thing you want is for the salts to start showing through as this will just look awful and as you say unsightly.
Did you get someone to build this porch for you as I would be ever so slightly concerned at they may not have put proper footings or built in damp course before building the porch. I would ask the advice of the builder, who ought to rectify the problem for you free of charge. Too much shoddy workmanship these days.
Good luck.

the salts are coming out of the clay material in the brick. this is from water or water vapor coming through the brick. perhaps there wasnt a good enough vapor barrier put over the wood sheeting. also steps should have been taken for ventilation behind the brick. they make a plastic vent that is used every two feet or so in the head joints near the top course.if you seal it you may end up sealing the salts in since they come through the brick. keep after it with a hose and stiff brush it should enentually stop bleeding through.

If the white is a powder like substance this is salt coming out of the bricks and it can be sealed with a special sealer from diy centres or builders merchants

You have to use a wire brush to get rid of the white stuff, then paint over the brickwork with a sealer.

This is caused by the salt in the sand ,It does look bad but will go away on its own soon.Building sand is not washed so the salt stays in it that is what is causing it to look un sightly.

This is Efflorescence... Salts coming to the surface as others have said...
Dont do anything with it at the moment... As the weather warms periodically wet them and this will draw them out quicker and they will go away....
