I think we are a nation of whiners and not active enough

You know, you are absolutely right. I get involved in various charitable works and campaigns for the local community and it is the same set of people that I find myself working with. It seems very few want to stand up and be counted and get their hands dirty while the majority are content to watch the box and let others do the work and take the flack. When it all goes wrong and affects them- then they whinge.

The previous generation were made out of stronger stuff. My elderly church hall cleaner (still working at 84 and doing a first rate job) got mugged by a scumbag a couple of weeks back who took her money, phone and watch and injured the poor old girl. Within days she had recovered and was back at work doing the business and facing the world. Lesser mortals might not have been so resilient. You make an excellent point there.

Unlikely. From Dunkirk soldiers were able to retreat to a great Mother Country that was worth defending. Now the indigenous population of these islands have nowhere to retreat and regroup, they can only stay and fight their own government.

I agree. We are a nation of whingers.

Take motorists for instance, they kill and maim over 10000 people a year on the roads, pollute the air I breathe without my permission, hold the country to blackmail, burn precious fossil fuel resources inefficiently thereby helping to increase global warming effects from greenhouse gases.

Then they whinge about speed cameras put there to protect people like me from insane boy-racers, they whinge about the amount of tax they have to pay in comparison to non-polluters like me, then they whinge about the price of fuel to me, (take that one up with the international cartel of oil companies), they try to tell me that the privilege they have been granted to drive on the roads is a right, (if it were a right you wouldn't have to pass a driving test!).

And now, some lunatic, probably a motorist, is sending parcel bombs, thereby linking motoring lobby groups forever with Osama Bin Laden and his cohorts. So let us stop and search every motor vehicle on the roads now! No Tax = Confiscate and destroy Car, No Insurance = 25 years imprisonment, Speeding = Public Execution, Being involved in an accident = 2 years imprisonment, being the cause of an accident = LIFE Imprisonment, Causing a death = Public Execution, No Licence = Public Execution.

Dunkirk spirit??? Do me a favour. Did you not see the way people were buying milk and bread for themselves in case the snow got worse? Never now do people only buy what they need, they have gotten to greedy. Dunkirk spirit left when the war generation passed their sell by date.
