Stay on here or send lots of E-Mails to friends. Be seen typing and as long as no-one can see your screen they will think you are working.

Like the guy said walk around with a clip board or else point a lot and mumble to your self as if you are thinking of something very important that mere mortals couldn't understand. I was a teenager labouring on a building site and an engineer came along pointing mumbling with clip board in hand. And the first thought that jumped to my mind. " I am going to be an engineer" and so it was. LOL

Shuffle papers. (No idle hands here.) Have an earnest look, (it gives an appearance of being focused.) Occasionally pose a question to a colleague. Don't make it too difficult. You want that person to feel the thrill that they actually know something of value. ( It indicates interest in the job.) Don't make eye contact with anyone, unless you are asking them a question. ( Suggests a serious commitment to the papers you are shuffling.)

Clipboards, work quite well, because you can walk around with them , you can wonder around talking to colleagues, visit different departments for a change of scenery, even go outside...... don't forget the pencil though... you need to tick a box every now and then.

Keep wiping your brow and do the odd huff and puff, shuffle some papers around on your desk, and keep calling the phone on your desk from your mobile, telling yourself you'd love to chat but are swamped with a dozen things to do on the computer.

Pile your table with books, papers and files, moan and whine about how much stuff you have got to do. Look scattered and overwhelmed. Draw your tie askew and if you do not wear one, fold up your shirt sleeves. Make your hair look dishevelled and and play solitaire, or answer questions on Yahoo! Answers to appear really busy on your system.

While working on bars I found just wandering around with a damp cloth in my hand did the trick.
