tried downloading norton and the product key didn't work so just need something that will work and which is free

Forget Norton's, McAfee and the others. Instead of doing things illegaly, why not download a free anti-virus program? Have you checked out AVG Free Edition? It's competely free (as long as you are a non-commercial user), updates daily and works far more effectively than Norton's. It uses far less resources (only 3 processes running opposed to about 10 with Nortons) and you won't have to pay anything for it.

AVG have also released a free anti spyware that you can get from their site. Here's the link...
