they symbolize death.

Maybe because it has been stereotyped so much that it truly is.

I enjoyed feeding a flock of ravens every day, and everyday for the winter months they would come, even for 4 years.

but one must realize the old story of Noah sending the raven out to look for land first. because he did not return, he sent the dove and it came back with olive branch. So there is a little bit of being second best. possibly encoded in our genes or in the spirit of a raven that was rejected to second best

The Alaskan natives have a tale in which Raven was responsible for creating the world! He is revered here in Alaska and the story the natives tell is truly spellbinding. Raven is also a shape-shifter and a messenger in other cultures. He is to be respected and revered as are all living things.

Ravens symbolise death because of their black feathers, and are said to be the messengers of the Underworld, carrying trinkets and lost items from departed family and friends into the next world, a little like crows, except ravens are also said to be the reincarnate form of a deceased person come back to deliver a message they couldn't tell anyone in their previous life.

Ravens were said to carry the souls of the dead to the afterlife. Therefore, if you see a raven, someone will die. That's pretty unlucky.

a raven represents the very spirit of our ancestors, bringing messages from this world to the world beyond ours and back, that said, I would surmise, that the raven is not an unlucky bird, but a bird of great wisdom, and great empowerment, with amazing shape shifting abilities.

Raven's have been closely tied to symbols of death.

Ravens being scavengers are often found around dead animals. Their habit of taking shiny objects added to the superstition that they are soul stealers or messengers of the dead.

I'd say seeing a Raven is good luck, if you are superstitious. They are lovely and very intelligent birds... you can train them to talk like parrots, even! They are getting rarer and so consider yourself fortunate to have seen one.

Mostly because they are symbolized with death. A flock of crows/ravens is called a "murder". That also might have something to do with it.
