OK I am writing 6 books and getting a new computer. Old printer had several problems and no good. I am getting a new printer with new computer. The main thing I wish for is that it always works and does not malfunction.

I would look at an HP, Lexmark, or Canon. These are my favorite three brands, and all make really good printers. I am currently running a canon photo printer the mp810 and it works great, but alas you probably need more of an office printer. You have to ask yourself what volume of printing you are going to do, what sort of features you need, such as the ability to scan in documents, and whether or not you want a laser or ink-jet printer.

If you are looking for a printer that is INCREDIBLY reliable and doesn't drink ink for breakfast (300 pages per inkjet cartridge is not that great), I would recommend that you go with the HP Deskjet 700's - 900's line-up. Basically any HP printer that uses the HP 45 inkjet cartridge is a good choice. I personally have a Deskjet 712 and it is SO reliable that HP quit making them (well... it's not the only reason why they stopped making them) I have had the 712 for MORE that 8 years and I have printed countless thousands of pages on it and it still works great. It has a "fast-draft" option for printing many pages quickly, but the quality isn't as good. However, it is a GREAT way to print your 6 books to have someone proof read without going through 4-6 ink cartridges, since the 45 cartridge has DOUBLE the ink capacity that most other cartridges from any brand have (except laser printers). And to top off the benefits, the HP 45 is INCREDIBLY easy to refill and you can refill it up to 8 TIMES and still have good print quality. (I have personally refilled one 5 times and I still am getting GREAT quality out of the cartridge. These things are built to LAST)

Here is a list of all the printers that use a HP 45 cartridge. Unfortunately, since the 45 cartridge is SO reliable and easy to refill, HP discontinued all printers that use the cartridge. SO, you have to buy one of these printers on E-bay. You can go for a nice newer model one like the 6127 or the 1600's lineup, or you can go for the tried and true 700's - 900's lineup

I was also going to say laser, but if you have budget constraints, they are not the best. However, the downside of an ink jet printer is smudging when wet .

Go to am office supply store. They help you decide. They try to steer you to the lasers and I agree, the print quality is better despite the cost of those huge ink developer/powder cartridges. They can even get you a ballpark figure of how many pages will one cartridge give you vs. how many pages per inkjet thingy. Someone else had suggested the Canon Pixma and that is so far the one they quote as one cartridge will give you 300 pages if I remember the sales pitch. One cartridge is about 8 dollars so break that down into cost per page--- thats a nice figure especially if you do a lot of drafts.
I guess a cheap inkjet printer for home use then laser for your final work.might be a good arrangement. I will second that first suggestion of Canon Pixma.
Bring your memory card/stick to office depot and have them print it out for you for final copy.

As for Lexmark, their ink cost is horrible.

My suggestion is that if the printer is nor Lite-Printing. I would look at the printer cartridges on the store shelf and find the lowest prices ink cartridges. Then, buy the printer to accommodate that. It will save you money in the long run b/c your ink will be cheap then :)

If u only need to print text - get a laser printer.
If u also need graphics and pictures, get a printer with a dedicated black ink tank, like the Canon Pixma iP4300.

I go along with the HP laserjet for doing a lot of printing quick. I recommend using http://www.worldclassink.com for any cartridges you may need. They are fuller, better, and cheaper. Hope this helps

No one can positively guarantee anything, but a good HP Laserjet seems your best bet.
