will i still be able to play on xbox live?
at the moment all i have to do is connect the ethernet lead to my modem.

wireless modems usually have an ethernet connection on them as well ive got wireless for my laptops but still connect my main computer using ethernet as the transfer is faster

Indeed, it will be much better than NTHell.

We have just had sky broadband, you get a Netgear wireless router, that has been locked down to the sky service.
Xbox works fine through it, and on sky max we get 14.6mb connection..not bad :) As mentioned by another user, the router has 4 normal network ports so you can plug in too if prefered.

you should be ok, the sky router you get usually is a rebranded netgear wireless router with 4 ethernet ports.
